Turkiye’s Isdemir to build 140 MW solar power plant in Diyarbakir

Türkiye’s largest integrated steel producer Isdemir plans to build a 140 MW solar power plant in Diyarbakır. S&P Global reports this with reference to a project document submitted to the country’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

Thus, the company continues to implement plans to decarbonize steel production and reduce energy costs.

Construction work on the facility, which will consist of 310,932 solar panels, is due to begin after environmental approval. The project is expected to be completed within 25 months.

Isdemir plans to reach a total installed capacity of 530 MW over the next two and a half years, when this and three other planned solar power plants in Mardin, Batman and Korum are commissioned.

Isdemir’s metallurgical production capacity is 5.8 million tons of steel per year, 3.5 million tons of flat products, 2.5 million tons of billets and 600 thousand tons of wire rod.

As GMK Center reported earlier, last June, Turkish Tosyali announced plans to build solar power plants in Osmaniye. The generated electricity will be used to meet the production needs.

Also, Turkish steelmaker Erdemir plans to invest $3.2 billion to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2030. The company intends to reduce coal consumption by replacing high-carbon raw materials with biomass and natural gas. Erdemir is also building new electric arc furnaces at its facilities in southern and northern Turkiye.
