In January-August 2023, steel enterprises of Turkiye reduced the import of pig iron from Ukraine by 36.7% compared to the same period in 2022 – to 76.58 thousand tons. This is evidenced by the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, reports SteelOrbis.
In August, Turkish steelmakers did not import pig iron from Ukraine. In total, for 8 months, Turkiye imported 896.77 thousand tons of pig iron, which is 16.3% less compared to the same period in 2022.
The main supplier of raw materials is the Russian Federation. In January-August, deliveries of products from Russia decreased by 8.2% y/y – to 621.45 thousand tons. The second place in terms of supply volume is Ukraine, and the third place is India (73.91 thousand tons), which is a new supplier of pig iron to Turkiye.
In August, the steel industry of Turkiye imported 42.91 thousand tons of pig iron. This is 69.5% less compared to August 2022 and 68.1% less than the previous month.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022, steel enterprises of Turkiye reduced import of pig iron from Ukraine by 46.7% compared to 2021 – to 157.55 thousand tons.
The decrease in the import of Ukrainian-made pig iron was mainly related to the war in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian seaports, which made the traditional way of delivering products to customers impossible. In total, in 2022, Turkiye imported 1.35 million tons of pig iron, which is 13.3% more than in 2021.
