Turkiye reduced pig iron import by 13.5% y/y in January-September

Turkey reduced pig iron imports by 13.5% year-on-year – to 1.02 million tons in the first 9 months of this year. This is evidenced by the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, according to S&P Global.

In January-September 2023, Turkish steel enterprises reduced imports of pig iron from Ukraine by 9% compared to the same period in 2022 – to 121.5 thousand tons.

The main supplier of these products to the country in the first 9 months of 2023 was the Russian Federation – 715.5 thousand tons (-7.2% y/y).

In January-September 2023, Turkish steelmakers also imported 74.5 thousand tons of pig iron from India, compared to zero last year. In the same period, these products also came from Brazil (54.8 thousand tons) and Germany (53.3 thousand tons).

To reduce the need for imports, Turiyey intends to increase its domestic production of pig iron.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 steek enterprises of Turkiye reduced import of pig iron from Ukraine by 46.7% compared to 2021 – to 157.55 thousand tons.

Also, Turkish steelmakers in October 2023 increased production of steel by 2.6% compared to September – to 2.965 million tons, thus increasing it to a maximum since June 2022. For 10 months of 2023, steel production in the country amounted to 27.45 million tons, which is 8.8% less compared to the same period in 2022.
