Turkey’s Kardemir has secured a contract worth $2.25 million to export railway wheels

Turkish steel producer Kardemir has signed an agreement with a client based in the Czech Republic to sell railway wheels worth $2.25 million. This was reported by SteelRadar, citing a statement from the company.

As the company noted, the railway wheels to be manufactured under this contract will be among the first batches of products supplied to international markets. The deal has therefore been described as an important milestone in the development of Kardemir’s product range and the expansion of its presence. The first delivery under this contract was successfully completed last week.

Thanks to its railway wheel production plant, which came on stream in 2019 (with an annual capacity of 200,000 units), Kardemir is the first and only manufacturer of these products in Turkey. The facility enables the manufacture of various types of railway wheels used in freight and passenger carriages, locomotives, high-speed trains and light rail systems in accordance with international standards.

Prior to this, Turkey’s demand for railway wheels had long been met through imports.

It should be noted that in April this year, Kardemir commissioned a new continuous casting machine (CCM) No. 2 with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. The equipment is designed to produce semi-finished products of various sizes. As the company noted, the investment is in line with its strategy to increase the share of high value-added products.
