Turkey increased its exports of steel products by 12.8% y/y in January-August

Turkey increased its exports of steel products by 12.8% year-on-year in January-August 2025, to 10 million tons. In value terms, over the eight months, it increased by 4.4% year-on-year, to $6.8 billion. This was reported by the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD).

In August this year, exports of metal products increased by 6.8% y/y – to 1.2 million tons, but their value fell by 1.2% y/y – to $831.2 million.

At the same time, in the first eight months of this year, Turkey increased steel imports by 17.9% y/y – to 12.6 million tons. Import costs during this period amounted to $8.8 billion (+3.6% y/y).

In August, imports of metal products increased by 18.6% compared to August 2024, to 1.6 million tons, and import costs for the period increased by 2.9% year-on-year, to $1.1 billion.

Domestic consumption of finished metal products in January-August increased by 3.2% y/y – to 25.7 million tons, and in August – by 12.5% y/y, to 3.5 million tons.

As a reminder, at the end of 2024, Turkey increased its steel exports by 27.6% y/y – to 13.4 million tons. Steel imports in 2024 amounted to 17.4 million tons (+1.7% y/y). Rolled steel consumption in the country last year increased by only 0.6% y/y, to 38.3 million tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the country’s steel enterprises increased steel production by 7.9% in August 2025 compared to August 2024, and by 6.7% compared to the previous month, to 3.39 million tons.
