Turkey increased imports of billets from Ukraine by 70.6% year-on-year during January–June

According to the results for January–June 2025, metallurgical enterprises in Turkey increased imports of steel billet from Ukraine by 70.6% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 98.82 thousand t. This was reported by SteelOrbis, citing data from the Turkish Statistical Institute.

In June, the volume of Ukrainian semifinished products supplied to the Turkish market was 17 thousand t, compared to 17.3 thousand t in June 2024.

Overall, in the first half of the year, billet imports to Turkey grew by 59.2% y/y, reaching 2.07 million t, with their value rising by 38.7% year-on-year to $1.04 billion. The key suppliers during the period were Malaysia (572.42 thousand t), Russia (450.69 thousand t), and China ( 305.58 thousand t).

In June of this year, the country imported 501.6 thousand t of billet (+5% compared to May and +202.3% year-on-year). The value of these imports amounted to $245 million.

It is worth recalling that, according to the results for June 2025, Turkish metallurgical enterprises reduced crude steel production by 3.1% compared to June 2024 and by 8.3% compared to the previous month, down to 2.89 million t-its lowest level since April of last year, according to data from the WorldSteel. During January–June, the country reduced crude steel output by 1.7% year-on-year, bringing it down to 18.3 million t.

In June, the country’s pig iron production declined by 5.9% m/m and 15.4% y/y to 698 thousand t, reaching its lowest point since April 2023.
