Imports of metal products decreased by 87.4% in March

According to the results of January-March 2022, Turkish steel plants reduced imports of hot-rolled steel from Ukraine by 43.6% compared to the same period in 2021, to 200.3 thousand tons, Steel Orbis, citing data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), reported.

At the end of March, Turkey reduced imports of Ukrainian cold-rolled steel by 87.4% compared to March 2021, to 18.01 thousand tons. Ukrainian steel products accounted for 18% of the country’s total purchases for three months.

In total, in the first quarter, Turkish steelmakers reduced imports of metal products by 1.5% compared to January-March 2021, to 1.1 million tons.

The biggest supplier of hot-rolled steel to Turkey is Ukraine, then India (18% of purchases), which supplied 197.3 thousand tons of products. In third place is Russia with 150.9 thousand tons (14%).

Earlier GMK Center reported that at the end of 2021, Turkey increased imports of hot-rolled steel from Ukraine by 65.9% compared to 2020, to 1.1 million tons. In general, the country increased imports of rolled products by 39.7%, to 4.9 million tons.

Turkey ranks seventh in the world in terms of steel production. According to World Steel, in 2021 the country increased steel production by 13% compared to 2020, to 40.4 million tons.
