Turkey in January-February decreased billet import from Ukraine by 38%

In January-February 2022, Turkey reduced billet import from Ukraine by 38.4% y-o-y to 84.8 thousand tons. It was reported by SteelOrbis citing the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

In February 2022, Turkey reduced import of Ukrainian products by 72.9% y-o-y to 29.7 thousand tons.

In total, in January-February 2022, Turkey reduced billet imports by 45.7% compared to January-February 2021 – to 315.6 thousand tons.

Turkey’s key billet import source is Russia accounting for 46% of total billet import. For two months, Turkey consumed 145.8 thousand tons of Russian steel products, which is 53.7% less than in January-February 2021.

Second is Ukraine, accounting for 27% of Turkey’s total billet import. Third is Oman – 20.6 thousand tons, or 7% of total billet import.

In 2021, Turkey imported 350.1 thousand tons of billets from Ukraine. It is at the level of 2020. In a year Ukrainian billets account for 12% of total Turkey’s billet imports.

Turkey is the seventh largest steel producer in the world in terms of volumes. According to World Steel data, in 2021 the country increased crude steel production by 13% y-o-y to 40.4 million tons.
