Třinecké železárny will cooperate with ČEZ ESCO in the field of decarbonization

Czech steelmaker Třinecké železárny (TŽ) will cooperate with ČEZ ESCO, the largest domestic provider of green solutions for the industry, in the field of decarbonization of steel production. This is stated in the company’s press release.

In the coming years, the Czech steelmaker plans to focus on decarbonizing its production processes, in particular, the company will invest in reducing energy consumption, solar and other low-emission power plants.

“Steel production is characterized by high energy consumption, and reducing it is a big and expensive task. However, the global trend is inexorable, and only those who are not afraid of investment and are dedicated to decarbonization and production efficiency will survive in the highly competitive steel market in the future. In addition, our customers will increasingly emphasize the low emissions of our steel, for whom sustainability is an important topic,” says Roman Heide, CEO of Třinecké Železáren.

By the end of 2030, the company plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55% compared to 1990 as part of the Green Werk transformation program. The program focuses on the use of green energy in production processes and includes approximately 20 projects worth more than CZK 40 billion. This year, the steel plant’s management also signed a memorandum with the government and the Moravian-Silesian region to support greater production stability.

During the meeting, representatives of the two companies also discussed the possible participation of Třinecké Železárny in the Alliance for a Zero Emissions Future. This business platform aims to facilitate the rapid and efficient transition of the Czech economy to low-emission sources while maintaining competitiveness.

Třinecké Železárny plans to invest CZK 1.5 billion ($63.2 million) in decarbonization of its facilities in 2024. The investments will help to maximize process automation, reduce CO2 emissions, save energy and take the first concrete steps towards sustainable steel production.

In 2023, TŽ produced 2.41 million tons of steel. The volume of investments in production facilities is estimated at CZK 1.4 billion.

The annual steel production capacity of Třinecké Železárny reaches 2.5 million tons. Its main products include wire rod, structural shapes and special long products, rails, seamless pipes and semi-finished products. Currently, the company employs about 7,000 people and, together with its subsidiaries and processing plants, up to 30,000 people.
