Třinecké Železárny will buy clean electricity from ČEZ ESCO

The PPA contract is currently agreed until the end of 2027

The Czech steel company Třinecké železárny has signed a three-year PPA contract with ČEZ ESCO for the supply of emission-free electricity with a guarantee of origin in the amount of 4.4 GWh per year. This is stated in the message of ČEZ Group.

The largest steelmaker will purchase electricity from the Vrskman photovoltaic power plant operated by ČEZ Group.

This is the first major PPA project for ČEZ ESCO, where the client purchases emission-free electricity directly from a specific renewable source that is not located on the client’s territory.

The PPA contract is currently agreed until the end of 2027. ČEZ notes that they believe that the system will prove itself, and the company will be able to extend or even expand the contract with Třinecké železárny.

As noted, ČEZ has been cooperating with Třinecké Železárny for a long time to reduce energy consumption and decarbonize production. The company is also a supplier of electricity to steel mills and has already implemented a number of technology contracts.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Třinecké Železárny plans to invest €1 billion in green transformation. A key part of the program will be the construction of an electric arc furnace to replace one of the two blast furnaces. Construction will start in 2026 and is expected to be completed in December 2028. This should reduce CO2 emissions by 55%.

The steelmaker has already invested more than 10 billion kroons in environmental improvements, and another 40 billion has been allocated for technological development.
