Thyssenkrupp to supply low-carbon steel to BMW Group

German steel manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Steel will supply its recycled green Bluemint steel to the BMW Group for the production of certain car parts. This was announced in a statement by the steel company.

Deliveries will begin this year. The exterior panels, interior parts, and battery housing of the BMW iX3 will be made from Bluemint steel in the future.

As noted by Thyssenkrupp Steel, the material has a high proportion of recycled raw materials and provides a reduction in CO₂ emissions, confirmed by TÜV Süd, compared to conventional steel.

Georgios Jovanakis, Chief Sales Officer at Thyssenkrupp Steel, explained that thanks to recycled steel, his company BMW Group has access to a steel product with reduced carbon content that meets the highest quality requirements and can be used directly in series production.

«The fact that Bluemint steel is used for both exterior panel components and battery housings demonstrates the great potential of low-carbon steel products. Electromobility and environmentally friendly steel together make an important contribution to reducing industrial emissions,» he added.

At the end of last year, Thyssenkrupp Steel announced the signing of a long-term supply agreement with German recycled raw materials supplier TSR Group. The agreement covers the latter’s innovative recycled product.
