Thyssenkrupp Nucera to supply electrolysers for green iron project in Australia

German electrolyzer manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Nucera has announced that it has been selected as the preferred supplier of electrolyzers with a total capacity of 1.4 GW for a green iron project in Australia.

Thyssenkrupp Nucera will supply electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen as part of the Mid-West Green Iron project, which is being implemented by the Australian company Progressive Green Solutions (PGS). The initiative plans to produce 7 million tonnes of environmentally friendly pellets annually. Half of this volume will be used to produce 2.5 million tons of green hot briquetted iron (HBI). The company intends to export HBI, with the first export expected in 2029.

The project has an integrated supply chain from mine to port, using existing key infrastructure. PGS’s long-term goal is to produce and export up to 30 million tons of DR-grade green pellets and 10 million tons of green HBI per year as it expands its operations.

Thyssenkrupp Nucera will continue to develop the project, which is currently in the early planning stages, together with the customer and will work on signing an EPF (engineering, procurement, fabrication) contract. Implementation is subject to a final investment decision.

Rio Tinto has expressed doubts about the prospects for the development of the green iron industry in Australia. The company cites a lack of economic incentives for this sector. Earlier, BHP expressed the opinion that it is too expensive for the country to develop this industry and that the investments will not pay off.
