According to last year’s results, the US reduced its imports of rolled steel products by 17.1% y/y – to 18.66 million short tons. This is evidenced by data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) amounted to 25.24 million tons, falling by 12.6% year-on-year.
The share of rolled product imports in the US market is estimated at 18% last year.
Imports of hot-rolled coils to the country last year fell by 39.2% year-on-year – to 1.72 million tons, cold-rolled products by 27.6% to 1.41 million tons, and galvanized products to 1.74 million tons.
In December last year, the country imported 1.16 million short tons of rolled steel (+6.9% month-on-month). Total steel imports (rolled and semi-finished products) in the last month of 2025 amounted to 1.58 million tons (-3.8% month-on-month).
The main sources of steel imports to the US last year were Canada (4.52 million tons, -31% y/y), Brazil (4.13 million tons, -8.3% y/y), Mexico (2.83 million tons, -19.7% y/y), South Korea (2.62 million tons, -5.3% y/y), and Germany (1.13 million tons, +5% y/y).
As reported by GMK Center, at the end of 2024, the US increased its imports of rolled steel by 3.7% compared to 2023, to 22.5 million tons. Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) for the year increased by 2.5% y/y, to 28.86 million tons. The main sources of steel imports to the US in 2024 were Canada, Brazil, and Mexico – 6.56 million tons, 4.49 million tons, and 3.52 million tons, respectively.
