The company warns that the trade situation is becoming increasingly difficult

The UK government must speed up its response to the European Union’s recent tariff proposals. This opinion was expressed by Rajesh Nair, CEO of Tata Steel UK, at a recent meeting of the Welsh Parliament’s Committee on Economy, Trade and Rural Affairs, according to the BBC.

He warned that the trade situation is becoming increasingly complex and that everything is happening quite quickly.

“But I am quite confident, given the discussions we are having, that the government will also seek to do things very similar to what the EU has done,” Nair said.

According to him, on the one hand, this means protecting the domestic steel market, and on the other, cooperating with the EU to secure certain preferences and concessions.

In this way, in his opinion, it is possible to ensure that there are the right trade interests between the two sides, as the EU is also a significant exporter to the UK.

The CEO of Tata Steel UK also assured that the new, more environmentally friendly electric arc steel plant in Port Talbot will be ready by the end of 2027.

“But the next few months, when we start construction on site, will, I think, be a test of how well we can do this job,” he said.

It should be recalled that after the EC announced its proposal for new protective measures, the UK demanded an urgent clarification of the announced quotas. At the same time, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the government is negotiating with the bloc on this issue.

The British steel sector has warned of a potential existential crisis as a result of such a move by Europe, as this market accounts for almost 80% of the country’s total steel exports.

Even before the proposal was announced, steelmakers indicated that the bloc’s quota cuts threatened them more than US tariffs. Industry organizations believe that the government should act quickly and use trade relations with the EU.
