The Tata Group is investing $1 billion in shipbuilding in India

The Indian conglomerate Tata Group plans to invest 100 billion rupees (around $1 billion) in the shipbuilding industry in the southern state of Kerala. This move represents a strategic expansion of the company’s business and is in line with India’s ambitions to strengthen its position in global maritime trade. This was reported by ET SupplyChain.

Negotiations between the local authorities and the conglomerate are in their final stages. The Tata Group has already applied for regulatory approvals, and the state government is ready to provide the necessary land. The government is viewing the proposal favourably and plans to formally approve it within a month. Details regarding the capacity of the future facility and the start date for production have not yet been disclosed.

For the conglomerate, with an annual turnover of $180 billion and a portfolio that already spans a wide range of products — from coffee and luxury cars to steel and smartphones — shipbuilding will be an entirely new line of business. Industry analysts believe that Tata’s extensive experience in engineering, materials science and logistics will give it a significant advantage in a sector that requires long-term capital investment and operational efficiency.

The Tata Group’s entry into this market comes against the backdrop of India’s drive to rapidly expand its own shipbuilding capacity, a sector historically dominated by China, South Korea and Japan. In April, New Delhi signed an agreement to deepen cooperation with South Korea, which ranks second in the world in terms of shipbuilding volume. New domestic investment is intended to reduce the country’s reliance on imports, support the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme and strengthen the country’s position on international trade routes.

At the same time, competition in the region is intensifying. Another of India’s industrial giants, the Adani Group, is developing a major deep-water transit hub near Vizhinjam, having secured $1.4 billion in investment from the Swiss company MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. This project is also currently under consideration by the Sathisan administration.

By attracting anchor investments from leading conglomerates, the Kerala government aims to develop the entire maritime value chain — from shipbuilding and repair to logistics services at the key ports of Vizhinjam and Kochi. This will create new jobs, stimulate related industries and facilitate technology transfer in the region, which is strategically located at the crossroads of international maritime routes.

As reported by GMK Center, Tata Steel is moving towards its long-term goal of expanding its steel production capacity to 40 million tonnes per year. Tata Steel plans to create additional production capacity of 4.8 million tonnes at Neelachal Ispat Nigam (NINL), one of its subsidiaries, and 2.5 million tonnes at the Tata Steel Meramandali plant. The company also plans to build a new steelworks with a capacity of 6 million tonnes per year in the state of Maharashtra.
