The rail freight transportation between Ukraine and Romania in 2022 has doubled

At the border crossings between Ukraine and Romania in 2022, 3.3 million tons of cargo were processed – almost twice as much as in 2021. Rail.Insider informs about it with the reference to Valeriy Tkachov, deputy director of Ukrzaliznytsia’s (UZ) commercial work department.

In 2021, the volume of cargo transportation through Romanian border crossings amounted to 1.68 million tons.

By volume of transportation in this direction, the largest share fell on grain, followed by iron ore. There are also cement and ferrous metals.

At the same time, at the beginning of January 2023, the indicators slightly worsened compared to December 2022. In particular, Romanian carriers voiced the problem with issuing visas for their employees, who have a limited period of stay abroad.

In addition, according to Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Mustafa Nayem, since January 18, Ukrzaliznytsia has resumed passenger traffic to Romania (Valia-Vicheului) from the Ukrainian Rakhiv station – the connection between them has not been carried out for more than 11 years. Despite the war, the railway station in Rakhiv was repaired, a new border and customs control point was established, and 19.2 km of railway track was overhauled. There are 117 artificial structures on the site – bridges, pipes, retaining walls and one tunnel.

UZ also restored 1.4 km of tracks, the Teresva station building, and the platform for passengers at the Teresva – state border section. The pause in the movement of trains on this section lasted for more than 15 years.

As GMK Center reported earlier, UZ in 2022 reduced cargo transportation by 52.1% y/y – to 150.6 million tons. The volume of transportation decreased for all types of cargo, the indicators for grain fell the least.
