In January-September 2022, the port complex of Poland Szczecin-Świnoujście increased the transshipment of iron ore by 29.9% compared to the same period in 2021 – up to 1.89 million tons. This is evidenced by the data on the enterprise’s website.
In September, iron ore processing in the port decreased by 77.3% compared to September 2021 – to 48.7 thousand tons.
In general, in January-September 2022, the port complex processed almost 26.7 million tons of cargo. This is 7.5% more than in the same period of 2021. In September, the company processed 3.17 million tons of cargo (+13.7% y/y).
Among the main cargoes transshiped by the port in January-September 2022 were:
Container processing by the port amounted to 54.1 thousand TEU in January-September (-15.4% y/y) and 6.75 thousand TEU in September (+1.1% y/y).
The Port Authority expects that in 2022, transshipment results should increase by 10% compared to last year.
“The port of Szczecin-Świnoujście takes measures aimed at the continuous development of the port complex. After the completion of the planned investment package, the Szczecin port will receive new and modernized berths, which will allow for the processing of an additional amount of cargo. The Świnoujście port terminal is being adapted for intermodal transportation. In addition, both ports are becoming more ecological and clean every day,” the message says.
In 2021, the port of Szczecin-Świnoujście increased cargo transshipment by 6.5% compared to 2020 – up to 33.2 million tons. Iron ore transshipment for the year increased by 12.2% – up to 1.89 million tons.
Since the beginning of the war, Ukrainian steelmakers have completely directed the export of products to Europe by rail. The blockade of the ports left only one direction for the shipment of products for the Ukrainian iron and steel industry, which is several times more expensive, and the delivery time of products is much longer.
At the end of May, the Polish port of Swinoujscie sent the first batch from 30 thousand tons of Ukrainian iron ore. The raw materials were delivered to the port by rail, loaded into the Gurnikov dock and sent to the customer in Algeria. In addition, at that time there were more than 50,000 tons of Ukrainian iron ore on the berths of the port.
In January-September 2022, Ukrzaliznytsia reduced the export transportation of iron ore by 40% compared to 2021 – to 19.8 million tons. In September, railway shipments of iron ore for export amounted to 1 million tons, which is 28.6% less than in August 2022 and 71.4% less than in September 2021.
