The first gas-piston power plant was put into operation at Kametstal

Kametstal officially put into operation the first gas reciprocating power plant at Metinvest Group’s enterprises. The new energy facility was launched on April 15, and all commissioning works were completed in May. The company said in a statement.

The power plant consists of four Dalgakiran gas piston units with a total capacity of 10 MW. The units are equipped with internal combustion engines that run on natural gas. To produce one megawatt of electricity, the plant consumes an average of 250 cubic meters of gas.

In addition to the generators, the project installed step-up transformers and a distribution substation with Schneider Electric equipment. Additional electrical communications were installed, and a technical upgrade was implemented: five oil circuit breakers were replaced with vacuum circuit breakers, which increases the reliability of the system. In addition, frequency converters were installed on the key equipment of consumers, which allow them to safely switch the load to the internal power supply.

During the commissioning, the specialists tested the operation of each generator individually and in all possible combinations, checked synchronization with external networks and worked out modes of stable connection to internal consumers. This made it possible to avoid voltage surges and ensure continuous power supply to critical areas.

The new power complex will help Kametstal reduce its dependence on external electricity suppliers and improve its stability in the face of energy challenges.

In 2025, Kametstal plans to implement an investment program with a total budget of UAH 2.5 billion. One of the largest projects is the overhaul of blast furnace No. 9.

In total, the company aims to implement 114 investment projects over the course of the year, including the modernization of key production equipment, and the renewal of water and gas pipelines.
