Tenova, which specializes in innovative solutions for iron and steel industry, will supply a 30-meter direct reduced iron (DRI) tower and electric arc furnace (EAF) to RINA’s Hydra project in Italy. This is reported on the Tenova website.
This €88 million initiative, funded by the European instrument NextGenerationEU and supported by the Italian Ministry of Enterprise and Production, aims to stimulate steel production using 100% hydrogen fuel. The project aims to enable all European steel producers to test this method and shape future investment plans for the green transition.
Using the advanced direct reduction technology Energiron, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, the DRI pilot plant and electric arc furnace will produce up to 7 tons of steel per hour at full production capacity by 2025, with a significant reduction in carbon emissions. The project will allow European steelmakers to experiment with different combinations of natural gas and hydrogen.
According to Carlo Luzzatto, CEO and general manager of RINA, the Hydra initiative is available to the entire supply chain for research and development in the field of clean steel production.
As GMK Center reported earlier, last fall, RINA, a multinational engineering research, development, inspection, and certification consultancy, announced the launch of the six-year Hydra research project. The initiative will also establish a training center to collect and disseminate know-how related to the design, implementation, and deployment of hydrogen-based decarbonization technologies. The center will become a permanent international research and development platform open to all stakeholders in the metals and energy industries.
