Tata Steel and ECOLOG to create an energy efficient corridor between the Netherlands and Norway

Steel company Tata Steel Nederland and energy company ECOLOG are launching an ambitious project aimed at decarbonizing the steel industry. The cooperation will involve importing hydrogen from hydropower in Norway and exporting captured CO2 for storage. This is stated in a press release from Tata Steel.

The liquid hydrogen will be transported by specialized vessels to Amsterdam, where it will be converted back to gaseous form. The use of hydrogen will be a key part of Tata Steel Nederland’s plan to produce green steel that meets the company’s climate goals.

Using modern technology, the cold energy generated during hydrogen regasification will be used to convert CO2 into liquid form. The captured CO2 will be transported to Norway, where it will be safely stored in underground tanks.

This innovation corridor will be one of the important steps towards climate neutrality for Tata Steel Nederland, which aims to achieve this goal by 2045. The partnership also underlines the strengthening of cooperation between the Netherlands and Norway in the field of energy and environmental technologies.

ECOLOG specializes in the transportation of CO2 and liquid hydrogen, supporting the fight against climate change, while Tata Steel Nederland remains one of the leading steel producers in Europe, committed to transforming the steel industry through sustainable development.

Earlier, the Dutch parliament supported the provision of about €3 billion in green subsidies to Tata Steel Ijmuiden. The government funds are to be used to decarbonize the plant and increase the sustainability of the country’s steel industry.
