Szczecin-Świnoujście port increased iron ore transshipment by 11.4% y/y in 2022

In 2022, the port complex of Poland Szczecin-Świnoujście increased the transshipment of iron ore by 11.4% compared to 2021 – up to 2.11 million tons. This is stated on enterprise’s website.

In December 2022, the processing of iron ore in the port decreased by 67.4% compared to December 2021 – to 57.1 thousand tons.

In total, in 2022, the port complex handled more than 36.8 million tons of cargo. This is 10.8% more than in 2021. In December, the company processed 3.21 million tons of cargo (+18.7% y/y).

Among the main cargo handled by the port in 2022:

  • coal – 4.31 million tons (+50.8% y/y);
  • grain – 1.65 million tons (-7.6% y/y);
  • gas – 4.44 million tons (+54.6% y/y).

Container handling by the port for 12 months of 2022 amounted to 75.38 thousand TEU (-8.2% y/y), of which in December – 7.15 thousand TEU (+22.6% y/y).

The port’s directorate previously predicted that cargo handling in 2022 would increase by 10% compared to the previous year.

In 2021, Szczecin-Świnoujście increased cargo transshipment by 6.5% compared to 2020 – up to 33.2 million tons. Iron ore transshipment for the year increased by 12.2% – up to 1.89 million tons.

Since the beginning of the war, Ukrainian steelmakers have completely directed the export of products to Europe by rail. The blockade of the ports left for the Ukrainian steel sector only this direction of product shipment, which is several times more expensive, and the product delivery time is much longer.

At the end of May, the Polish port of Swinoujscie sent the first batch with 30 thousand tons of Ukrainian iron ore. The raw materials were delivered to the port by rail and sent to the customer in Algeria. At that time, there were more than 50,000 tons of Ukrainian iron ore on the port berths.

As GMK Center reported, Ukrzaliznytsia in 2022 reduced transportation of iron and manganese ores by 45.9 million tons, or by 59.2%, compared to the same period last year – to 31.7 million tons. The ferrous metals decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons.
