Steel sales in Germany increased by 7.4% y/y in October

Sales of steel products in Germany in October this year increased by 7.4% year-on-year and by 6.7% month-on-month – to 838 thousand tons. This is evidenced by data from the German steel distribution association BDS, S&P Global reports.

Flat products accounted for the majority of sales, or 61.1%, at 511.86 thousand tons (+6.5% y/y and +10.7% m/m). Sales of long products increased by 5.2% year-on-year and 1.8% month-on-month – to 250.25 thousand tons.

For the first 10 months of the year, total sales increased by 0.6% y/y – to 8.2 million tons. Sales of flat products decreased by 2.5% y/y – to 5 million tonnes, while sales of long products increased by 2.5% y/y – to 2.4 million tonnes.

In October, German stocks of steel products amounted to 1.9 million tons (-2.9% y/y, +0.6% m/m), with flat products accounting for 65.8% of the total in the period (1.3 million tons).

German steelmakers increased steel production by 7.7% year-on-year – to 3.22 million tons in October 2024. The figure was up 14.7% compared to October 2023. Rolled steel output in the country amounted to 2.77 million tons, up 7.4% m/m and 7.1% y/y.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Germany is among the ten largest steel producers in the world according to World Steel. In 2023, the country decreased steel production by 3.9% compared to 2022 to 35.4 million tons, ranking 8th in the global ranking of producing countries.
