The American division of Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB has announced a price increase of at least $40 per short ton for all its metal products, according to SMU.
The company has informed its customers that the price adjustment applies to all new non-contract orders with shipments starting on January 4, 2026. At the same time, the company will continue to apply existing surcharges, including regional freight premiums.
The decision was announced following a similar move by another major US thick plate producer, Nucor. The company announced yesterday that it is also raising prices for flat products by $30/ton with the opening of the order book for January. The rise in prices in recent weeks indicates growing market pressure on manufacturers to restore margins.
SSAB Americas announced that it had closed non-contract orders for December, intending to set a new price level for next year. The company produces thick plate at plants in Alabama and Iowa, supplying industrial consumers in the United States.
The current market situation also shows signs of an upward trend. According to SMU estimates, the average price for thick plate steel in the US is currently $1,015/t, which is $55 higher than the low of $960/t recorded at the end of September. Analysts expect further price increases in the near future.
It should be noted that Nucor has been raising prices for hot-rolled coil for the fifth week in a row. In addition, offers are also being adjusted for thick plate. For the week of November 24-30, 2025, spot prices for HRC are $915/t, compared to $910/t a week earlier. Thick sheet is offered at $1015/t.
