Exports of ferrous metal scrap from Germany in January–February 2026 remained at last year’s level, according to Kallanish, citing data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Total shipments amounted to 1.26 million tons, with a value of €568 million ($665 million).
Despite overall stability, the structure of exports underwent noticeable changes. In particular, shipments to Italy rose by nearly 20% year-over-year, indicating a revival in demand from local electric arc furnace steelmakers. At the same time, exports to the Netherlands fell by 19% year-on-year, which may be linked to changes in logistics flows and domestic demand.
The price situation in the market remains relatively stable. In April, scrap prices in Germany remained virtually unchanged, despite rising energy costs in Europe and active exports to Turkey. Average prices stood at €295/t for E3 scrap, €305/t for E2/8, and €305/t for E40.
At the same time, market participants expect prices to rise in May. The main driver could be rising transportation costs amid the escalating situation in the Middle East, which is affecting logistics and freight rates.
As a reminder, by the end of 2025, Germany increased its exports of ferrous scrap by 5% year-on-year, reaching 7.7 million tons. The value of these exports last year amounted to €4.54 billion.
Scrap imports into the country last year fell by 9% year-on-year, to 3.98 million tons, with a value of €2.3 billion. The decline in volumes corresponded to lower production levels in the German steel industry.
