Scrap collection in Ukraine increased 37% in 11M according to UAVtormet

In January–November 2021, scrap collection in Ukraine grew by 36.6% to 3.78 million tons y-o-y, according to a statement by the Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals (UAVtormet) on their Facebook page.

In the opinion of the Association, this upward trend results from the good balance in Ukraine’s domestic market, facilitated by the purchase prices that steelmaking companies agreed to pay, as well as from the increase in exports.

The volumes of scrap exports in 11M totaled 547.5 thousand tons, while over the same period last year, only 33 thousand tons were exported. Scrap imports increased by 1.3% to 21.3 thousand in the same period.

The Association also notes an increase in the supply of scrap to Ukrainian companies. Thus, a growth of 17.2% to 3.06 million tons was recorded in 11M, while the needs of Ukrainian steel producers have been met by 101.7%.

As reported earlier, in January, UAVtormet predicted a drop in scrap collection in 2021 at 6–9% as well as a drop in scrap supplies to steel producers at 3–4.8%.
