Salzgitter is expanding its steel certifications for military equipment

Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has received new certifications for the use of SECURE steels in military equipment. With this, the company has completed a key phase in expanding its portfolio of armored steels for the defense industry. This was announced in a press release.

The new approvals confirm that the products meet the technical requirements of the Bundeswehr and allow the steel to be used in military applications. The SECURE 400, SECURE 450, SECURE 500, and SECURE 600 grades have received certification in expanded thickness ranges from 6 mm to 45 mm, depending on the steel type.

The company notes that previously, only certain variants of SECURE 450 and SECURE 500 had limited approvals. Following the expansion of certification, Ilsenburger Grobblech will be able to meet approximately 80–90% of the military armored vehicle sector’s demand for specialized steel. This marks a transition from localized use of the products to nearly full supply of certified protective steel for vehicles.

According to Thomas Brecht, Head of Development, the company has completed the initial phase of developing the SECURE line for the defense sector but continues to work on new grades and expanding thickness ranges. In particular, SECURE 300 and SECURE 350 steels are still undergoing the approval process for highly specialized solutions.

The certifications received strengthen Ilsenburger Grobblech’s position among the few European manufacturers capable of supplying a wide range of protective steels for the defense industry. The company also plans to unveil its updated portfolio for the first time at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition, which will take place in June in Paris.

As a reminder, Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, previously announced plans to invest over €2 million in a new waterjet cutting system at its Ilsenburg site. The project at the Ilsenburger site will enhance steel processing for the defense sector and support the decarbonization of production.
