Sales of German steel distributors amounted to 9.43 million tons in 2024

Sales of steel products by German distributors, according to the Association of German Steel Distributors (BDS), remained almost at the level of the previous year in 2024. This is reported by Kallanish.

Last year, sales amounted to 9.435 million tons, up from 9.434 million tons in 2023.

Sales of long products in 2024 amounted to 2.83 million tons, and flat products – 5.76 million tons. In the “other products” category (wire rod and other products), they increased by about 140 thousand tons to 841 thousand tons at year-end.

The month with the slowest performance in 2024, as in the previous year, was December – in both years, just over 460 thousand tons were sold during this period.

As a reminder, steel sales in Germany in January 2025 increased by 76.3% compared to the previous month to 814.86 thousand tons. The growth compared to December was primarily driven by increased sales of flat products, which jumped by 80.8% m/m to 508.12 thousand tons. Nevertheless, they decreased by 5.1% year-on-year. Sales of long products in January amounted to 228.25 thousand tons, up 67.6% from December and 11.9% from January last year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Germany increased steel production by 5.2% in 2024 compared to 2023 to 37.23 million tons. Pig iron production for the year amounted to 24.33 million tons (+2.9% y/y), hot-rolled steel production – 31.61 million tons (+3% y/y).
