The unit will become the most powerful machine of this type in the world

Chinese steelmaker Wuyang Iron and Steel, a subsidiary of HBIS Group, has placed an order with Primetals Technologies for a single-strand continuous casting machine (CCM) with several record-breaking features. This is stated in the message of Primetals.

The unit will be installed at the company’s plant in Wuhan, Hunan Province. This CCM will be the most powerful machine of its kind in the world. In addition, it will produce the world’s thickest slabs, with a thickness of up to 460 mm. It is scheduled to be launched in 2025.

With the new equipment, Wuyang will be able to produce plates for heavy industries such as shipbuilding and wind turbines. The annual capacity will be 1 million tons of high-quality slabs. Products of this thickness are typically produced using semi-continuous casting machines or vertical casting machines.

Wuyang Iron and Steel is a leading producer of wide and thick steel plates in China. The company also operates a research center, which is key to the plate production sector.

Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine has placed an order with Primetals Technologies for a 180-ton electric arc furnace (EAF) to be installed at its Linz plant, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Primetals Technologies will conduct a decarbonization study for China Steel Corporation, the largest integrated steel producer in Taiwan. The study will focus on reducing CSC’s carbon footprint through operational improvements and technological changes at its Kaohsiung plant. The company’s annual steel production is about 10 million tons.
