POSCO intends to support the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine

The South Korean company plans to participate in energy and infrastructure restoration projects

The South Korean steel producer POSCO intends to support the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, in particular, to participate in a number of energy and infrastructure projects. This was stated by the head of POSCO Group Choi Jeong during a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation led by the ambassador of Ukraine to South Korea Dmytro Ponomarenko, informs ThekoreaTimes.

«The South Korean government is determined to support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts. Korean companies such as POSCO Group are actively involved in this. The partnership between our countries will be strengthened in order to be able to start the reconstruction projects as soon as possible,» said Choi.

In March 2023, the steel company created the so-called Working Group on the Recovery of Ukraine, which focused on a series of possible projects in five areas: steel, food products, secondary raw materials for batteries, energy and infrastructure. The company also intends to accelerate humanitarian cooperation by participating in projects in the field of education in Ukraine.

Regarding the steel industry, POSCO plans to participate in various projects, including the generation of energy resources for steel production as part of the Ukrainian program for the reconstruction of steel enterprises.

In addition, Ukraine and South Korea have agreed to study the possibilities of steel construction, in particular, modular buildings, as this can significantly reduce construction time. POSCO also conducts a special student exchange program for students of Ukrainian universities.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the concept of restoration of the country «Steel Dream» from Metinvest-SMC predicts that Ukraine will need about 3.5 million tons of steel to rebuild housing and social infrastructure destroyed as a result of the Russian invasion. Recovery will take 5-10 years. The company notes that domestic enterprises will be able to fully meet the needs of the country.

Metinvest-SMC presented in May 2023 tconcept of restoring the country «Steel Dream». The company offered Ukrainians 13 types of steel buildings, each of which is made in several versions, taking into account different conditions and circumstances. In general, the concept includes more than 200 ready-made projects based on three steel prefabricated elements (prefab solutions): frame, module and platform.
