The state acquired a strategic steel plant for PLN 253.8 million
The Polish Ministry of National Defense has completed the acquisition of the Huta Częstochowa metallurgical plant for PLN 253.8 million. The notarial deed was signed on December 22, 2025. This was reported by GazetaRegionalna.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who visited the enterprise, called the deal historic and stressed that the state could not allow the plant to fall into “the wrong hands.”
According to him, the decision is crucial not only for the country’s security but also for the stability of supply chains for strategic products for the Polish defense sector, the development of Częstochowa, the region, and national industry in general. The enterprise, with its converter shop and rolling mill—one of the largest production halls in the world with an area of almost 50 hectares under one roof—is capable of providing a full cycle of thick-gauge steel production, including armor plates for the defense industry.
The minister emphasized the role of the workforce, noting that contracts for 2026 are mostly already secured, and in January the plant expects to receive permits to resume production of armored sheets. The events were also attended by local government representatives, who emphasized the significant impact on the regional economy.
After the acquisition, the assets will be transferred to the Military Property Agency. These steps are in line with the strategy of restoring production capacity and long-term use of the enterprise in strategic segments.
A separate letter of intent was signed between Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, Węglokoks, and Huta Częstochowa regarding cooperation for the needs of the defense industry. PGZ representatives stated that Polish military equipment, from Miecznik frigates to infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled guns, should be made entirely from Polish steel. Huta Częstochowa is the only plant in the country capable of producing hardened thick armor plates, which makes the deal strategic for Poland’s defense independence.
Ultimately, the nationalization of Huta Częstochowa is the logical conclusion to a difficult period in the company’s history and, at the same time, the start of a new strategic cycle in its development. After bankruptcy, a change of ownership, and a production downtime, the plant will receive long-term institutional support from the state and a clear position in the country’s defense security system.
It should be noted that by the end of the year, Huta Częstochowa plans to reach a steel production level of 300,000 tons, and in 2026, 0.5 million tons. The current year has been a period of recovery for the plant, which had to be practically rebuilt from scratch, but the company is already showing steady growth.
