Polish JSW increases coal production and coke production in Q2

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), Europe’s largest producer of coking coal, significantly increased its coal and coke production in the second quarter of 2025. Total coal production amounted to 3.34 million tons, which is 16.7% more than in the first quarter and 16.4% more than in the same period of 2024. This is stated in the company’s press release.

The growth in the coking coal segment was particularly noticeable – 2.82 million tons (+21.4% q/q, +22% y/y).

JSW President Ryszard Janta emphasized that these results were achieved thanks to systemic changes, in particular the implementation of the Strategic Transformation Plan, the launch of new longwalls, and the more efficient use of labor and technical resources.

In June, JSW’s production figures exceeded expectations:

  • total coal production reached 1.13 million tons (104.1% of the plan);
  • coking coal – 0.96 million tons (105.9%);
  • coke production – 0.23 million tons (97.1%).

Although the structure of coking coal production changed due to force majeure at the Budryk and Knurów-Szczygłowice mines, the total volume exceeded the planned level.

Coal sales for the quarter totaled 3 million tons, which is on par with the previous quarter but 15% higher year-on-year. Coking coal sales increased by 5% quarter-on-quarter and 15.2% year-on-year – to 2.62 million tons. At the same time, coke sales in June amounted to 0.26 million tons (99.5% of the plan).

Despite the positive dynamics in production, average product prices declined. Coking coal fell in price by 8.5% q/q – to PLN 683 per ton. The price of coke was PLN 1,038.5/ton (-1.4%).

JSW’s estimated revenue in Q2 was PLN 2.76 billion, which is 4.8% less than in Q1.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, JSW reduced its coal production by 9.3% (12.3 million tons) and coke production by 8.6% compared to 2023 due to complex geology and operational problems. Last year, the company recorded a net loss of PLN 7.3 billion.
