Poland’s Huta Częstochowa to resume production on January 20

The Polish steel plant Huta Częstochowa is to resume production on January 20, after a break of almost 15 months, Wnp reports.

The smelter is scheduled to start production on this date, and a few days later, a rolling mill will be put into operation.

On January 10, the company carried out a trial steel smelting, which will be tested in the laboratory to make sure it reaches the required parameters.

In December last year, Huta Częstochowa officially started cold acceleration, a technological stage before the full resumption of operations. Cold equipment was tested, including furnace mechanics, continuous casting equipment, overhead cranes and, separately, rolling mill equipment.

The plant’s current tenant, Węglokoks, is responsible for the launch of the plant, with which the liquidator has entered into a corresponding agreement.

The reopening of the plant will not only strengthen the domestic steel market but also reduce Poland’s dependence on imports, which is important in the context of geopolitical instability.

The Ministry of Industry of Poland has set up a working group to develop a national strategy for the steel sector. Its tasks, among others, will include identifying the main challenges for the industry that require intervention at the national and European levels; developing proposals to improve the functioning of the steel industry, etc. The team started working in early 2025.
