Poland’s JSW mined 1.01 million tons of coal in August

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), Europe’s largest coking coal producer, mined 1.01 million tons of raw materials in August 2025, which is 84% of the monthly plan. Despite serious challenges in the coal segment, the company remained stable on an annual basis and demonstrated strong performance in the coking sector, according to a press release.

The result was negatively affected by the consequences of the fire at the Budryk mine, the declaration of force majeure in May, the early completion of work on some of the longwalls, and difficult mining and geological conditions. However, in January-August, the company achieved 8.44 million tons of production, fulfilling the annual plan by 100.5%.

Coal sales in August amounted to 1.18 million tons (95.3% of the plan), and since the beginning of the year – 8.4 million tons, also at 100.5% of the annual targets. The energy coal segment performed particularly well: its sales reached 0.25 million tons against the plan of 0.19 million tons (135.4%). At the same time, coking coal sales were lower – 0.93 million tons against the expected 1.05 million tons.

The coke segment remained the most successful. In August, its production reached 0.30 million tons, which is 116.3% of the plan, and sales reached 0.29 million tons (110.1%). Since the beginning of the year, JSW has produced 2.01 million tons of coke (103.9% of the plan) and sold 1.98 million tons (97.8%). This was made possible by increased production capacity utilization.

The company notes that even in difficult market conditions and production challenges, JSW remains on course for stability. The fulfillment of the annual coal production plan and the exceeding of coke production targets confirm the effectiveness of the measures implemented as part of the Strategic Transformation Plan.

In August, JSW received an official decision to extend its license for the extraction of hard coal and methane from the Borynia deposit until the end of 2042. The decision ensures the stability of the mine’s operations and the development of the region for 17 years. Its reserves are estimated at almost 40 million tons of high-quality coking coal, as well as over 80 million cubic meters of methane.
