Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), the largest coking coal producer in Europe, has received an official decision to extend its license to extract hard coal and methane from the Borynia deposit until the end of 2042. The relevant decision was issued on August 5, 2025 by Krzysztof Halos, Chief Geologist of Poland, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, according to a press release.
This is a strategic decision for the continuous operation of the Borynia mine, which is part of the Borynia-Zofiówka mine. The deposit’s reserves are estimated at almost 40 million tons of high-quality coking coal, which is important for the steel industry, as well as more than 80 million cubic meters of methane, which can be used for energy purposes.
The mining will be carried out in accordance with the conditions set by the decision of the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Katowice and the agreed development plan. The concession is the result of many years of preparatory work, the key elements of which were an environmental report and a technical project developed by the Main Mining Institute in Katowice.
Before the decision was made, the document passed all the necessary approvals, including from the ministers of industry, regional development, and local authorities of Jastrzębie Zdrój and neighboring communes of Pawlowice, Świerkłany, and Mścian.
«The extension of the Borynia concession is an extremely important decision in terms of the stability of our company’s operations. It allows us to plan production for many years to come and continue to invest with a focus on the future,» commented Adam Rozmus, JSW’s Deputy Chairman of the Board for Technical and Operational Affairs.
According to Polish law, production is not possible without a valid concession. Thus, the new decision allows JSW to continue operations at the Borynia facility without hindrance, preserving jobs and contributing to the development of the region until at least 2042.
Earlier, JSW officially launched an ambitious METH2GEN project aimed at combating coal mine methane and using it to produce cheap hydrogen. The total budget of the initiative is €25.6 million, of which more than €20 million is funded by the company itself.
