Poland increased imports of rolled products from third countries by 26.3% y/y in January-October

In January-October 2024, Poland increased its imports of rolled steel products from third countries by 26.3% compared to the same period in 2023, to 1.869 million tons. This is based on GMK Center’s calculations based on Eurostat data.

Over 10 months, imports of flat products increased by 33.5% y/y and long products by 8.6% y/y – to 1.42 million tons and 472.39 thousand tons, respectively. Flat products accounted for more than 75% of total steel imports to Poland in January-October 2024.

Hot-rolled flat products accounted for the bulk of imports – 786.53 thousand tons (+29.3% y/y), coated flat products – 393.54 thousand tons (+59.9% y/y), and cold-rolled flat products – 169.18 thousand tons (+26.3% y/y).

In October, imports of rolled steel products to Poland totaled 232.89 thousand tons, up 35.2% y/y. Supplies of long products increased by 25% y/y, to 50.1 thousand tons, and flat products by 38.3% y/y, to 182.79 thousand tons.

In October, steel exports from Poland to third countries fell by 6.8% compared to October 2023, to 22.99 thousand tons. In particular, exports of long products decreased by 9.7% y/y – to 10.21 thousand tons, and flat products by 4.3% y/y – to 12.78 thousand tons. Angles, shaped and special profiles accounted for the largest export volume of 5.32 thousand tons (+13.2% y/y).

In January-October, Poland exported 246.07 thousand tons of rolled steel, down 5.6% y/y. Exports of long products fell by 0.6% y/y – to 133.62 thousand tons, and flat products by 11% y/y – to 112.45 thousand tons.

Last year, Poland reduced imports of rolled steel products from third countries by 14% compared to 2022, to 1.77 million tons. Steel exports increased by 15.2% y/y – to 318.8 thousand tons.

In 2023, Polish steelmakers reduced steel production by 13.1% compared to 2022, to 6.44 million tons. Last year, the average monthly steel production in Poland amounted to 536.42 thousand tons, while in 2022 the figure was 617.25 thousand tons (-13.09% y/y).
