Kazakhstan increased steel production by 9.1% y/y in January-April

In January-April 2025, metallurgical enterprises of Kazakhstan increased steel production by 9.1% compared to the same period in 2024, up to 1.41 million tons. This is evidenced by data from the Statistical Committee of the Ministry of Economy, Kallanish reports.

Flat production increased by 14.8% y/y over four months to 957.99 thousand tons.

In April, the country’s steel industry produced 369.63 thousand tons of steel, up 1.2% compared to March and 5% by April 2024. The output of finished products for the month increased by 0.8% y/y and remained unchanged month-on-month at 246.54 thousand tons.

It is worth reminding that in 2024, Kazakhstan increased steel production by 9.5% compared to 2023, to 4.17 million tons. Last year, flat production increased by 18.2% compared to 2023 – to 2.9 million tons.

Kazakhstan’s Qarmet Iron and Steel Works exceeded its annual production targets by 15%, steel by 15%, coke by 18%, sinter by 12%, and in the long products shop by 17%. The improved performance of the industry’s key enterprise has a positive impact on the country’s overall production.

In January this year, the plant increased steel production to 319 thousand tons, up 32.3% m/m. Plate Mill No. 1 produced 264 thousand tons of finished products, which is 3.7% higher than the target. In total, Qarmet plans to produce 3.7 million tons of steel in 2025.

Last year, Qarmet and China’s Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Co agreed to build a cast iron pipe plant in Kazakhstan. The design capacity of the plant will be 200 thousand tons per year, and the total investment will be $161 million.

The company also signed a $1 billion agreement with China Metallurgical Group to establish long-term and comprehensive cooperation in the mining and metals industry.
