Kametstal starts overhaul of gas pipeline for coke production

The Kametstal Iron and Steel Plant, part of the Metinvest Group, has begun major repairs on the coke oven gas pipeline in the primary gas refrigerators section of the coking chemical products capture workshop. The work is being carried out as part of the Gas Safety-2025 program on the instructions of the company’s CEO, according to a press release.

The main goal of the repair is to improve the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the gas pipeline. Its function is to transport large volumes of gas mixture from the coke oven battery to the primary refrigerators, where the gas is cooled and purified. The resulting chemical products are used in production processes, and the coke oven gas itself is a valuable energy resource – it is used to generate steam, heat batteries, and produce thermal energy in the thermal power plant.

During the overhaul, specialists are completely replacing 70 meters of 1200 mm diameter pipe, which transports coke oven gas to the gas blowing machine and then to the thermal power and coke oven shops and other consumers. The work includes dismantling and installing structures, restoring metal supports and platforms. New shut-off valves will also be installed and the gas pipeline connection to the refrigerators will be improved.

Employees of the line control department of the occupational health, industrial safety, and ecology directorate are responsible for the safety of the repairs. They monitor compliance with the work plan and prevent risks to the health of employees. In addition, rescuers from State Fire and Rescue Unit No. 35 are on duty at the facility every day, ensuring the safe performance of hot work.

As a reminder, Kametstal recently began large-scale construction of a new blast furnace gas collector in accordance with the capital investment program for 2025. The project will replace the worn-out pipeline and increase the efficiency of blast furnace gas utilization.
