Kametstal resumed operation of its rolling mill after forced downtime

The Kametstal Metallurgical Plant, part of the Metinvest Group, resumed operation of its rolling mill in January this year after a prolonged forced shutdown. This was reported in a statement by the company.

“In the extremely difficult conditions of energy instability caused by unprecedented shelling of infrastructure, the rolling mill operators returned to production and rolled the first batch of 524 tons of railway axles,” Kametstal emphasized.

As noted, during the war, the company’s wheel rolling section faced difficulties in obtaining steel billets for the production of axles, which previously came from Azovstal. In 2025, an alternative Ukrainian supplier also lost the ability to meet the rolling mill’s demands due to the war. As a result, the unique facility was shut down for almost a year.

Thanks to the work of specialists from Metinvest and Kametstal, alternative solutions for imported billets were found. As a result, in January, the company’s rolling mill resumed production of hot-rolled axles for domestic and European customers. This was preceded by thorough preparation of billets and equipment for mill 250, which began in December last year.

It should be noted that in 2025, Kametstal once again confirmed its leading position among Metinvest’s metallurgical enterprises in terms of the number of new product ranges developed. Of the 11 new types of metal products launched by the company during the year, seven were developed and implemented by the team at this enterprise.
