Kametstal carries out overhaul of converter No. 1 with renewal of key systems

Kametstal, a Metinvest Group steelmaker, has launched a major overhaul of one of its key steelmaking units, BOF vessel No. 1. The work is being carried out as part of the 2025 overhaul program with a focus on updating the main equipment and power systems, the company said in a statement.

The main focus is on the modernization of the gas exhaust system. In particular, the tuyere and auxiliary caissons, the lower part of the main caisson (the “skirt”), and protective screens are to be replaced. At the same time, the stator and rotor of the flue gas blower electric motor are being replaced.

An important stage has already been completed – the repair of the converter body to restore its tightness. This made it possible to proceed to a complex operation – turning the support bearing. After lifting more than 1,000 tons of the vessel, the specialists will turn the outer cage of the bearing, which will extend its service life. The lubrication system will also be inspected and updated.

Among the important tasks is the complete replacement of the refractory lining. The dismantling of old materials has already been completed.

According to Andriy Zuev, Deputy Head of the BOF Shop for Engineering, the repairs cover not only the main equipment but also the entire infrastructure of the unit: oxygen supply machines, pumping units, vertical ducts, steel carriers and slag carriers. The work is being carried out in all areas – mechanical, power and electrical – to ensure safe and stable operation of the BOF vessel after the repair is completed.

As a reminder, Kametstal has started one of the largest overhauls under the 2025 program – the second overhaul of blast furnace No. 9 (BF-9). The main work is focused on upgrading critical components of the unit to improve its performance and reliability.

In 2025, the company plans to invest UAH 2.5 billion ($59.8 million) in production facilities, which is a record amount in recent years. The largest project is the overhaul of BF-9, which will receive a third of the program’s total budget. In total, the plant plans to implement 114 investment projects during the year.
