The Italian Ministry of Economic Development (Mimit) has reached an agreement with JSW on the revitalisation of the historic steelworks in Piombino. The framework agreement was signed by JSW Steel Italy, Piombino Logistics and other relevant state and municipal institutions. The document sets out a joint framework for implementing the site’s industrial plan and ensuring full employment for workers. This was reported by Controradio.
As explained by the ministry, this agreement aims to restore stable and concrete prospects for the development of the historic Tuscan enterprise.
The Fiom-Cgil trade union noted that during the negotiations, clear and binding guarantees for staff were secured, including a ban on JSW taking any unilateral action against employees. They emphasised that it was the active protests that helped to incorporate the trade unions’ demands into the final text.
Fim Cisl described this development as “a decisive step for Piombino’s industrial future”. Representatives of the organisation expressed their satisfaction that their demands regarding job security had been fully taken into account, despite the fact that the trade union had not been directly involved in the official negotiations between state and private bodies.
As reported by GMK Center, the Indian company JSW Steel has commenced work on the development of an integrated steel plant in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The total investment in the project, which will be implemented in two phases, will amount to approximately €1.5 billion.
