Jindal Steel has ordered a second direct reduction plant for its project in Oman

Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of Jindal Steel Group, has ordered a second hydrogen-ready direct reduction plant from Danieli for the production of hot briquetted iron (HBI). This was announced in a statement by Danieli.

The equipment will be installed in Duqm (Oman), where the first Energiron DRI plant is already under construction and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026.

The second plant will be equipped with Zero-Reformer Energiron direct reduction technology, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli. Its annual capacity is planned to be 2.5 million tons of DRI with an average metallization rate of 94%. Direct reduced hot iron will be briquetted for the production of HBI suitable for storage or export.

Jindal Steel Duqm began construction of its $3 billion project in November 2023.

As a reminder, Brazilian mining company Vale has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OQ Alternative Energy as part of its strategy to decarbonize its operations in Oman and transition to industrial use of renewable energy sources. The document establishes a framework for developing renewable energy solutions to power Vale’s enrichment plant in the port of Sohar, as well as supporting the energy needs of the future Green Metallic Mega Hub in Duqm.

As reported by GMK Center, Oman will build the first environmentally friendly ship recycling plant in the Middle East. The fully integrated port complex will be able to dismantle and recycle more than 70 ships annually and, in the initial stage, is expected to produce approximately 2 million tons of high-quality low-carbon steel per year.
