Ukrainian seaports handled 10 million tons of cargo in April

As of April 2024, port operators in Ukrainian seaports handled 9.91 million tons of cargo, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).

This is almost twice as much as in the same period in 2023.

During this period, the largest amount of grain cargo was handled – 6.3 million tons, compared to 3.9 million tons in April 2023.

In April of this year, the cargo turnover through the Ukrainian sea corridor amounted to 7.7 mln tons, 5.1 mln tons of which were the products of Ukrainian farmers.

In total, in January-April 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 37.7 million tons of cargo, compared to 22 million tons in the same period last year.

Since August 2023, Ukraine has exported 45 million tons of cargo to 44 countries through the sea corridor created by the Navy, with almost 1,600 vessels sailing through it. As of May 10, 108 more vessels were approaching the ports, exporting more than 3 million tons of cargo.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian ports increased cargo transshipment by 5% y/y – to 62 million tons. This can be considered the beginning of the industry’s recovery after a difficult 2022, when port cargo turnover fell by 2.6 times compared to pre-war 2021. Iron ore transshipment accounted for 5.9% of the total cargo turnover, or 1.9 million tons. The most dynamic increase in transshipment was observed in the Danube ports (Izmail, Reni and Ust-Dunaisk).
