Imports of flat products to Ukraine increased by 10.8% y/y in February

In February 2025, 82.13 thousand tons of flat products were supplied to the Ukrainian steel market from abroad. This is 10.8% more than in February 2024 and 7.8% less than in the previous month. This is according to GMK Center’s calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

Coated flat products (HS 7210) accounted for the largest import volumes during the month, amounting to 37.43 thousand tons, up 22.7% y/y and 23.9% m/m. Hot-rolled flat products (HS 7208) accounted for another 27.27 thousand tons (-3.7% y/y, -25.4% m/m) of imports. Deliveries of cold-rolled flat products (HS 7209) increased by 35.7% y/y over the month, but decreased by 36.3% m/m – to 9.41 thousand tons.

In January-February, Ukrainian consumers imported 171.19 kt of flat products, up 17.6% y/y.

Supplies of coated flat products increased by 12.5% y/y – to 67.62 thousand tons. Turkey imported 35.72 thousand tons of the product, Poland – 9.46 thousand tons, Slovakia – 8.45 thousand tons.

Imports of hot-rolled flat products increased by 11.8% y/y – to 63.85 thousand tons. Most of the imports were purchased in Turkey – 51.85 thousand tons. Consumption of foreign flat cold-rolled products increased by 2.3 times y/y – to 24.19 thousand tons. Turkish products accounted for more than 60% of the total consumption – 14.56 thousand tons.

Overall, in January-February, Turkey accounted for 61.3% (104.13 thousand tons) of imported flat products to Ukraine.

Import costs increased by 4.1% y/y over 2 months – to $169.79 million, and in February they amounted to $84.15 million (+2.2% y/y, -1.7% m/m).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, 983.49 thousand tons of flat products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 8.3% compared to 2023.

Coated flat products accounted for about half of the imports – 468.61 thousand tons (+7% y/y). Hot-rolled flat products accounted for another 34.7% of supplies, or 341.21 thousand tons (+8.7% y/y), and cold-rolled flat products for 79.31 thousand tons (-0.9% y/y).

In 2024, the cost of importing flat products increased by 5% y/y – to $1.08 billion.
