Imports of coking coals fell by 11% in January–August

In January–August, Ukrainian coke plants reduced imports of coking coals and coking coal concentrate by 11% to 6.37 million tons compared to the same period of the previous year,

according to the updated statistics of Ukrmetallurgprom.

Shipments of Ukrainian coal to domestic steel companies in the first eight months amounted to 2.3 million tons, 5% up from January–August 2019.

Ukrainian coke plants received a total of 8.67 million tons of coking coals, 7% down from the same period of the previous year.

The share of imported coals in the total supply was 73.5%, 3.2 pp down from January–August last year.

In January–August, 5.42 million tons of coke were supplied to Ukrainian coke plants, 12% down from the same period of the previous year. Most of supplied coking coals, 5.35 million tons, were produced in Ukraine. This is 8% down from the same period a year earlier. Coke imports dropped by 80% to 0.07 million tons in 8 months.

The share of imported coke in the total volume of supplies made up 1.3% against 5.9% in January–August 2019.

In 2019, Ukrainian coke plants received 13.92 million tons of coking coal, 4% down from 2018. The share of Ukrainian coals increased by a third to 3.5 million tons against 2018, whereas that of imported coals decreased by 12% to 10.43 million tons.
