Hydnum Steel will build the first green steel plant in Spain

The Spanish project Hydnum Steel (HS) received priority status from the regional government of Castile-La Mancha. HS said.

This status, in particular, provides preferential administrative registration and reduces the time required for the implementation of the project, especially in matters of territorial planning and urban planning, as well as measures of economic and financial incentives.

Hydnum Steel plans to build the first green steel plant in Spain and one of the first in Europe. The future facility, which will be located in Puertollano, will produce high-quality rolled steel using green hydrogen to produce direct reduction iron (DRI). The DRI together with the recycled scrap will then be melted in an electric arc furnace.

It is planned that the initial production volume of the Hydnum Steel plant will be 1.5 million tons of rolled products per year. At subsequent stages, it will be increased to 2.6 million tons per year.

The production process at all stages will be carried out using renewable energy. This will reduce CO2 emissions to almost zero compared to traditional blast furnace steel production. The technology used by Hydnum Steel will reduce carbon emissions by almost 5 million tons per year. As noted by HS, this is similar to the volume generated annually by automobile emissions in Madrid.

The investments of Hydnum Steel will amount to about €1.65 billion, and will provide more than 500 direct jobs in stages I and II (2026-2029) and more than 1.1 thousand at the next expansion.

«Our project will not only lead to the decarbonization of the steel industry, demonstrating that the production of» green «steel is viable and profitable, but will also become a major driver of economic activity and employment, attracting subsidiary companies and contributing to the development of services and infrastructure,» said Eva Maneiro, CEO of Hydnum Steel.

The start of work is scheduled for 2025. The plant will meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly steel products from key industries in Spain, such as the automotive industry and construction.

Project Hydnum Steel promoted by Russula, a corporation, providing innovative technological solutions to the main steel producers worldwide. Alongside Russula, the project boasts internationally prestigious partners such as Siemens, ABEI Energy, and Primetals Technologies.

Blastr Green Steel plans to build a green steel plant with a capacity of 2.5 million tons of ultra-low CO2 steel per year in Inkoo (Finland). The technology partner of the project is Primetals Technologies.
