GMH Gruppe has launched a rolling mill that is unique in Europe

GMH Gruppe, one of Europe’s largest metalworking companies, has officially opened a new high-tech rolling mill at its plant in Georgsmariengütte (Germany), which will be a key element in modernizing production and expanding the company’s capabilities in the special steel market. This is stated in the company’s press release.

The €26 million investment is unique in Europe. The new line combines two three-roll blocks that can operate either synchronously or separately, providing exceptional flexibility and high rolling precision.

According to plant director Marc-Oliver Arnold, the new complex allows the company to respond much more quickly to customer needs, reduce production downtime, and manufacture a wider range of sizes and grades of steel. One of the units, the RSB 370++, has been in operation at the plant since 2001 and was modernized in 2012, while the other, the RSB 445++, is completely new and was built together with all the necessary infrastructure.

The key innovation of the complex is the ability to combine the operation of the two units, which allows the production of steel with a diameter of 20 to 130 mm, with a potential expansion to 142 mm. Another important technical achievement is the ability of the new 185-ton unit to move quickly between the two lines. This significantly reduces changeover time and increases production efficiency.

The GMH Group emphasizes that the launch of this equipment is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its position in the European market for high-quality special steels. Together with the new hardening and tempering lines, as well as the modernization of Buderus Edelstahl’s rolling capacities, the company is strengthening its role as an innovative and sustainable partner for the automotive, energy, mechanical engineering, and other industries.

GMH Group CEO Alexander Becker noted that the project is primarily aimed at increasing efficiency, flexibility, and reducing energy consumption in production. This allows the company’s customers to remain competitive in rapidly changing markets, particularly in the electric vehicle and high-tech components segments.

In November, GMH Gruppe completed the acquisition of Buderus Edelstahl GmbH’s business units, which include a hot rolling mill for large-sized rolled products and a mechanical processing division, including thermal processing, for highly complex products. The integration of Buderus provides an expanded product range, access to new markets, and long-term supply stability.
