Global steel production rose by 1.7% y/y in June

Global steel production in June 2026 rose by 1.7% year-on-year – to 155.7 million tonnes. This is according to the World Steel Association’s global ranking of steel-producing countries (70).

Compared with the previous month, the figure fell by 1.4%.

Total steel production in the CIS countries plus Ukraine fell by 2.2% year-on-year during the month but rose by 1.5% month-on-month – to 6.8 million tonnes. In June, Ukraine produced 690.8 thousand tonnes of steel, which is 11.2% higher year-on-year and 9.7% higher than the previous month.

According to World Steel, the top ten steel-producing countries in June were:

  • China — 83.7 million tonnes (+0.4% year-on-year);
  • India — 14.1 million tonnes (+4.5%);
  • the USA — 7.2 million tonnes (+3.5%);
  • Japan — 6.8 million tonnes (+1.3%);
  • Russia — 5.6 million tonnes (-3.4%);
  • South Korea — 5.3 million tonnes (-0.9%);
  • Turkey — 3.3 million tonnes (+14.7%);
  • Germany — 2.9 million tonnes (+9.5%);
  • Brazil — 2.8 million tonnes (+0.1%);
  • Vietnam — 2.6 million tonnes (+27.5%).

In the first half of 2026, global steel output reached 931.5 million tonnes, 0.7% than in the same period of 2025. In the CIS countries and Ukraine, 38.6 million tonnes of steel were produced during this period, down 8% year-on-year.

As reported by GMK Center, global steel production for 2025 fell by 2% year-on-year – to 1.8 billion tonnes. Total steel production in the CIS countries and Ukraine last year fell by 4.4% year-on-year – to 81.3 million tonnes. China reduced its output by 4.4% year-on-year (960.8 million tonnes), India increased it by 10.4% year-on-year (164.9 million tonnes), and the US by 3.1% year-on-year (82 million tonnes).
