Exclusive Global steel production fell by 5.8% y/y in June

Steel production in 70 producing countries amounted to 151.4 million tons per month

Global steel production in June 2025 fell by 5.8% compared to the same month in 2024, to 151.4 million tons. Compared to the previous month, the figure decreased by 4.7%. This is evidenced by the global ranking of steel-producing countries (70) by the World Steel Association.

Total steel production in the CIS countries + Ukraine decreased by 8.8% y/y and 4.3% m/m to 6.7 million tons, in particular in Ukraine – it decreased by 2.3% y/y and 15.4% m/m to 621,400 tons.

According to World Steel, the top ten steel-producing countries in June were:

• China – 83.2 million tons (-9.2% y/y);
• India – 13.6 million tons (+13.3%);
• USA – 6.9 million tons (+4.6%);
• Japan – 6.7 million tons (-4.4%);
• Russia – 5.6 million tons (-7.4%);
• South Korea – 5 million tons (-1.8%);
• Turkey – 2.9 million tons (-3.5%);
• Brazil – 2.8 million tons (-0.5%).
• Germany – 2.7 million tons (-15.9%);
• Iran – 2.2 million tons (-15.5%).

In January-June, global steel production decreased by 2.2% y/y – to 934.3 million tons. In the CIS+Ukraine region, the figure decreased by 5.4% y/y – to 41.6 million tons. Ukraine produced 3.68 million tons of steel in six months, down 4.9% y/y.

As GMK Center reported earlier, global steel production decreased by 0.9% in 2024 compared to 2023, to 1.839 billion tons. In December 2024, the figure was 144.5 million tons, which is 5.6% more than in December 2023 and 1.6% less than in the previous month.

Ukraine produced 7.57 million tons of steel last year, which is 21.6% more than in 2023. In December, production volumes amounted to 547,000 tons (+5.1% y/y; +1.1% m/m).
