German GMH Gruppe completes acquisition of Buderus Edelstahl

German tool steel manufacturer GMH Gruppe has completed the acquisition of Buderus Edelstahl GmbH’s business units, which include a hot rolling mill for large-sized rolled products and a mechanical processing division, including thermal processing, for highly complex products. This is stated in the company’s press release.

All conditions for closing the deal have been met, and the relevant authorities have given their approval, so the legal formalities have been completed. The integration of Buderus Edelstahl into the processes and value chains of GMH Gruppe is now beginning.

«We are pleased that the closing conditions were met smoothly and on time. We are looking forward to integrating Buderus into GMH Gruppe. This will enable us to offer our customers a significantly broader range of top-quality products,» said Dr. Alexander Becker, CEO of GMH Gruppe.

The integration of Buderus Edelstahl, Schmiedewerke Gröditz, and Kind & Co makes GMH Gruppe the European market leader in tool steel. This ensures long-term supply stability and allows the company to expand its product range, including sizes up to 300 mm², which opens up access to new markets beyond the traditional internal combustion engine segment.

The mechanical processing and heat treatment capabilities of Buderus Edelstahl complement those of Schmiedewerke Gröditz, guaranteeing the production of complex open-die stamped components to a high standard of quality and ensuring the supply of raw materials within the group, in particular from Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, Stahlwerk Bous, and Pleissner Guss.

For the more than 300 employees of the acquired divisions, the change of ownership opens up new perspectives within an international industrial group.

As a reminder, in September, Germany increased steel production by 15.4% compared to the previous month, to 2.97 million tons. Compared to the same month in 2024, the figure decreased by 0.6%. Production volumes have been declining for the ninth consecutive month on an annual basis. In January-September 2025, the country’s steel industry reduced steel production by 10.7% y/y to 25.38 million tons.

GMH Gruppe is a supplier of a full range of steel products, from steel production to ready-to-install components. It is one of the largest private metalworking companies in Europe. The group comprises more than 20 medium-sized companies in the steel, forging, and foundry industries, serving customers in more than 50 countries.
