France reduced steel production by 5% m/m in October

In October 2024, French steelmakers reduced steel production by 5% compared to the previous month, to 976 ths tons. Thus, the country ranked 17th in the global ranking of steel-producing countries (71) by the WorldSteel Association.

Compared to the same month in 2023, steel production by French steelmakers in October increased by 0.1%. Thus, monthly steel production dropped to less than 1 million tons after two months of production at 1-1.1 million tons.

In January-October, steel production in France increased by 8.8% compared to the same period in 2023 – to 9.03 million tons. Average monthly steel production for this period amounted to 903.5 ths tons compared to 832.9 ths tons in January-October 2023.

In January-October 2024, steel production in the European Union increased by 2.1% compared to January-October 2023 – to 109.3 million tons. Global steel production for 10 months amounted to 1.55 billion tons, down 1.6% year-on-year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, France reduced steel production by 17.4% compared to 2022, to 10.01 million tons. The average monthly steel production for the year amounted to 840.7 ths tons, while in 2022 the figure was 1.01 million tons (-16.76% y/y).

Steel production in the European Union amounted to 126.3 million tons in 2023, down 7.4% y/y.

There are 11 steelmaking companies in France, including ArcelorMittal Dunkerque (2.25 million tons of steel per year), Saarstahl Ascoval Saint-Saulve (730 ths tons per year), LME Trith-Saint-Léger (820 ths tons per year), Ascometal Hagondange (825 ths tons per year), Riva Sam Neuves-Maisons (850 ths tons per year), and Riva Sam Neuves-Maisons (850 ths tons per year), Riva Sam Montereau (720 kt/y), Riva Alpa Gargenville (700 kt/y), Riva Iton Seine Bonnieres Sur Seine (550 kt/y), Celsa France Boucau (1.2 million t/y), ArcelorMittal Méditerranée Fos sur Mer (2.55 million t/y), Ascometal Fos sur Mer (900 kt/y). The total capacity of the plants is 12.09 million tons per year.
